Detect Dust Problems Earlier in Animal Feed Production

Monitor filter performance, detect unexpected dust conditions and support more reliable feed mill operations with continuous dust monitoring.

From raw material handling and grinding to mixing, pelleting and packaging, animal feed production involves dust-generating processes that require effective monitoring and control.

Sintrol provides continuous dust monitoring solutions to help feed manufacturers detect filter leaks, monitor process and filtration conditions, identify airborne dust events and track dust levels across their facilities.

Where does dust monitoring add value in feed production?

Filter leak detection and filtration performance

Continuous dust monitoring downstream of baghouses and dust collectors helps detect filter leaks and changes in filtration performance. Early detection supports targeted maintenance and helps identify problems before they develop into larger production disruptions.

Grinding, mixing and pelleting

Feed production involves several dust-generating processes. Monitoring dust levels in suitable extraction and process ducts helps operators identify abnormal conditions and assess the performance of dust collection systems during different production stages.

Process monitoring and pneumatic conveying

Dust concentration trends in suitable process ducts can provide information about changing operating conditions. Unexpected changes may indicate material build-up, blockages, leaks or other process abnormalities that require investigation.

Material handling and packaging

Raw material intake, transfer points and packaging operations can generate airborne dust. Ambient dust monitoring at selected locations helps identify periods of elevated dust levels and supports the evaluation of local extraction and dust-control measures.

Monitoring in potentially explosive environments

Feed production processes may involve combustible dust and Ex-classified areas. Sintrol offers Ex-certified dust monitoring instruments for suitable applications in potentially explosive environments.

What happens when a baghouse filter starts leaking?

Differential pressure monitoring provides information about pressure conditions across a filter, but it does not directly measure the dust passing through it.

A dust monitor installed downstream of a baghouse detects changes in particulate levels in the outlet duct. A sudden increase can indicate a damaged filter bag or another filtration problem that requires investigation.

Continuous dust monitoring helps production teams identify changes early, enabling maintenance teams to take corrective action before issues escalate into production problems.

Case: Detecting filter leaks in an Italian feed mill

An Italian animal feed producer needed a reliable way to detect baghouse filter failures and identify dust leakage before it caused environmental or production problems. The application involved demanding installation conditions, including ATEX Zone 20 inside the duct and Zone 22 outside.

Sintrol worked with its local partner to test dust monitoring instruments at the manufacturer’s Verona plant. During a two-month trial, two monitors were installed in parallel.

When a filter bag failure was deliberately simulated, both instruments detected the change and generated an alarm. The trial also demonstrated how the monitoring signal responded to changes in the type of feed being produced.

Following the successful trial, the customer purchased additional Sintrol dust monitors for the facility.
